By now, it is possible that everybody knows that you should consume eight glasses of water daily regardless of your state of thirst. The benefits have been highlighted by many as well; from clear and healthy skin to the flashing of toxins and accelerated hair growth. O what endless praise! However, how much of this information is really true? How does drinking water really bring all these benefits?

Findings from a study on the physiological effects of water showed that although the health benefits of water in the diet on the skin were correct, they are yet to be clearly elaborated. The research points out that the human body is made up of 75% water. It also highlights the functions of water; as a medium for all biochemical reactions in the body, vital for body heat regulation, maintaining body volume, as a shock absorbent as well as lubricant among many other functions.

Water is regulated by the stratum corneum layer of the skin. The stratum corneum prevents epidermal dehydration; it modulates water flux and retention. Water hydrates both superficial and deep portions of the epidermis. In fact, the research likened this function to the atopic application of moisturizer. Without water, dermatological dysfunctions are imminent. Water also enhances skin elasticity.

However, their is no correlation between the quantity of water consumed to its perceived function of enhancing skin youthfulness. It is supposed that water decreases abrasion of skin fibers through lubrication; thus, enhancing the skin's youthfulness. Nevertheless, this elucidation is not supported by any scientific evidence.

In regards to the recommended dietary water intake, the amount of water required by the body varies in relation to age and gender. From published data on the discourse, an adult woman (between 18 years to 70 years and beyond) requires 2.7 liters of water daily, which roughly amounts to the proverbial eight glasses. However, pregnant women require 3 liters of water daily while lactating women require 3.8 liters. It is important to note that this recommended dietary requirements includes water contained in beverages and succulent foods.

According to another medical journal, the right amount of water consumption should be 30ml for every kilogram (Kg) of body weight. The research points out atmospheric temperature, strenuous activity such as exercises also affect the quantity of water consumed.

From the looks of things, their is no one size fits all for water consumption. In regard to skin beauty, more research is required to back up suppositions conveyed predominantly through testimonials.
